NEW DELHI: After Tata group’s proposal for an SEZ in Gopalpur, home
ministry has now raised objections on a 1,012 hectare multi-product zone
in Assam’s Kamrup district, the first proposal for the north-east. The
ministry, which had earlier sought a blanket ban on SEZs in the region,
wants more time for background check on developer Shyam Burlap group.
With two proposals deferred in two weeks, security is the latest concern
on the long list of issues, ranging from tax exemptions to land
acquisition. Security concerns are something that the commerce ministry
had not thought about while preparing the policy, but officials
dismissed it saying that the concerns expressed for specific projects
and would be addressed soon.
