NEW DELHI: The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts proposes to set
up a Special Economic Zone in the National Capital Region of Greater
Noida for processing of handicrafts.

"We have put up a demand to the government for setting up a product
specific SEZ so that all the processing activities for handicrafts are
brought under one complex," EPCH Executive Director Rakesh Kumar said.

He said the broad objective of setting up the SEZ is to provide support
to cottage, small scale and SMEs engaged in exports of handicrafts. All
the export and import operations would be on a self-sustaining basis,
Kumar said.

The proposed zone would provide an internationally competitive and
hassle-free environment for exporters. The units in the SEZ could either
be engaged in manufacturing or rendering of services.

The Council is also planning to open showrooms and warehouses in the US
and Europe, which would be backed by publicity, direct marketing and
organising festivals of India.
