Kandla SEZ to sizzle with 46 new units

RAJKOT, MARCH 8 : Around 46 new industrial units are coming up in
India's first special economic zone (SEZ), the Kandla SEZ, which
currently has 166 units in operation. This was indicated by Upendra
Vashisth, development commissioner and Thomas Kurien, deputy
commissioner of the Kandla SEZ.
Speaking on the occasion of 42nd foundation day of the Kandla Port
Trust, the Kandla SEZ commissioner informed that 26 new units were
coming up in the SEZ and the total exports from the SEZ in 2007 so far,
has remained at Rs 1,336 crore and is likely to increase further by March.

Providing updates about the Kandla SEZ, both the officials said that all
the land in the SEZs had been fully utilised and the authorities have
acquired more land to accommodate the new units. Spread across an area
of 1,000 acres, the SEZ has 166 units having a total capital investment
of Rs 255 crore, of which Rs 26.40 crore is foreign direct investment
(FDI).

They also said that the new units would bring in close to Rs. 424 crore,
and 14 of the total new units are in an advanced stage of setting up
operations. These units are likely to be operational in next few days.

Talking about the export capacity of the 46 new units, Kandla SEZ
officials revealed that all the new units have the capacity to carry out
exports worth Rs 1,600 crore and those 14 units, which are at an advance
stage, have an export capacity to the tune of Rs 800 crore. Kandla SEZ
provides employment to 15,000 people.
