BoA meet for SEZ proposals postponed

NEW DELHI, JAN 10: The Board of Approvals (BoA) for special economic
zones (SEZs) on Wednesday postponed its meeting, which was to consider
38 proposals. The BoA was to look into four SEZ proposals from Andhra
Pradesh, one from Chhattisgarh and 33 from Maharashtra. Officials,
however, did not give any fresh date for Wednesday's meeting.
Among the major ones are the 101.3 hectare airport based multi-product
SEZ by the GMR group in Andhra Pradesh, 460-hectare education-related
services SEZ near Pune by Med Services and Infrastructure Ltd,
1250-hectare multi-product SEZ in Navi Mumbai by NMSEZ Development Co,
3590-hectare multi-product SEZ in Maharashtra by Bombay SEZ Builders and
also two big multi-product SEZs by India Bulls in Maharashtra. In
another BoA meeting on January 19, an additional 52 proposals will be
taken up, including the proposal by the Tatas to set up an SEZ in
Gopalpur, Orissa which the home ministry cleared . However, that meeting
is expected to be held as scheduled. So far, 50 SEZs have been notified,
237 proposals have been given formal approval, while 164 have been given
in-principle clearance. Meanwhile, CII president R Seshasayee, in a
statement, said the country needed SEZs away from urban centres so that
such zones supplement the urban areas and not draw on their scarce
resources.
